royal academy of arts - 7 Deaths of Maria Callas: a preview with Marina Abramović
Join artist Marina Abramović, soprano Nadine Benjamin and ENO Artistic Director Annilese Miskimmon for a discussion of their creative collaboration for the UK premiere of Abramović’s multi-media opera production, 7 Deaths of Maria Callas.
Maria Callas, one of the most iconic opera singers of the 20th century, has long fascinated performance artist Marina Abramović Hon RA. At this exclusive preview, soprano Nadine Benjamin will perform an aria from 7 Deaths of Maria Callas. Marina Abramović and Annilese Miskimmon will then join Benjamin to discuss the creative process behind bringing the opera to the London stage for the first time. The event will be chaired by Axel Rüger, Secretary and Chief Executive of the Royal Academy of Arts.
The exhibition Marina Abramović is at the Royal Academy of Arts from 23 September 2023 – 1 January 2024.

Singing / Co-creation: Nadine Benjamin, Amber Fasquelle, The negation of the artistic abilities of female composers has a long tradition and continues to have an effect today. The evening examines the reasons for this and organises the discourses.
Taking up the idea of the contentious salon, an ephemeral archive of songs of all genres and languages will be created, transcultural and cross-stylistic. Together with an actress, a pianist, four singers, a girls' choir and a brass ensemble, we question the song for its political, aesthetic and social explosive power.
Singing / Co-creation: Nadine Benjamin, Amber Fasquelle, Milena Knauss, Simone Riksman - Acting / Co-creation: Mareike Hein - Piano / Co-creation: Lana Bode - Director: Teresa Reiber - Set design: Margarethe Mast - Dramaturgy: Marion Meyer - Production management: Sophie Beck
